Send defective or wrong goods back — stock leaves the shelf, the supplier's ledger adjusts.

The same Returns screen handles goods going back to a supplier — flip the Customer | Supplier toggle in the header to enter supplier-return mode.

Return against a purchase

  1. Search the purchase — by supplier, PO number or product; the period filter narrows old orders.
  2. Open the purchase order — its received lines load with per-line cost and tax.
  3. Set each line's return qty (capped at received minus already-returned) and pick a reason — defective, wrong item, over-ordered, expired, quality issue, other.
  4. Process — a purchase return posts with its own number.

Posting does three things at once: stock leaves the location that received it, the supplier's ledger picks up the return (less owed — or supplier credit if you'd already paid), and the journal entry writes itself. A retried submit replays the same return instead of double-deducting stock, so a flaky connection can't double-post.

Stock that never came through a PO

Items added as opening stock (Excel import, quick-add) have no purchase to return against. Searching surfaces them under products too — those reverse through the dedicated reverse opening stock dialog, which needs the stock.adjust permission.

Tip: Check the supplier's balance on Accounting → Accounts payable after processing — a return on an unpaid PO shrinks what you owe; on a paid one it becomes credit to apply against the next purchase.
