POS with UPS backup — billing through load shedding

The queue is longest exactly when the light goes. A POS that dies with the power is not a POS — it is a very expensive clipboard. Here is how to spec a counter that bills through load shedding without spending on a generator.

Layer one: the software keeps working offline

Before any hardware, the software decides whether a power cut is a pause or a stop. If the till needs the internet to sell, a dead router means a dead counter. SYEZPOS keeps billing fully offline — sales, returns, udhaar — and syncs everything when the connection returns. The queue keeps moving no matter what the network is doing.

Layer two: power the four things that matter

A small UPS does not need to run the shop — it needs to run the sale. Prioritise, in order: the router (for sync and card machines), the receipt printer, then the terminal if it needs one. A standard 1–2 kVA UPS covering just those three is far cheaper than powering the whole shop.

Lights, fans and the deep freezer do not belong on the counter's UPS. Separate the circuit mentally — and ideally physically — so the billing line stays light and lasts longer on battery.

Layer three: pick a terminal with its own battery

The simplest backup is a device that is already one. A laptop or an Android tablet running SYEZPOS carries hours of charge on its own battery — the UPS only has to keep the printer and router alive. A phone on a stand is an even leaner version of the same idea, and the hardware guide covers what a small setup actually costs.

The realistic setup for a Pakistani counter

  • Terminal: laptop, tablet or Android phone — its own battery covers the longest cuts.
  • Small UPS on router + receipt printer only — most cuts last minutes, not hours.
  • Offline mode in the POS — the counter works even when the UPS gives up.
  • Paper fallback that actually happens: a pad for the ten-minute worst case, keyed in later.

Test it before you need it: kill the main switch during a quiet hour, run a sale, print a receipt, take a wallet payment, close the shift. The shop that rehearses the outage is the shop that barely notices it.
