Weighing scale POS integration — a kiryana and mart guide
Rice, daal, spices, sugar, fruit, meat — half of Pakistani grocery sells by weight, not by piece. The question shop owners ask is whether the weighing scale talks to the POS. Here is how weighed items actually work at a counter, the three ways to set it up, and what to check before buying a scale.
How weighed items work at the till
The product is priced per kg or per gram instead of per piece. At billing the cashier selects the item, the weight is entered, and the system calculates the price — Rs 480/kg × 0.750 kg = Rs 360, printed on the same receipt as everything else. Stock drops by the weight sold, not by one unit.
In SYEZPOS this is built in: items are marked sold-by-weight, the cashier enters the kg or gram amount, and pricing, stock and accounts all follow. The weighing itself is where the options start.
Option 1: Separate scale, manual entry — simplest and cheapest
Keep your existing counter scale. Weigh the item, type the reading into the POS. This is how most kiryana shops actually work — zero integration cost, works during load shedding, and nothing new for staff to learn. The risk is a mistyped weight, which is rare when the customer is watching the same display.
Option 2: Price-embedded barcode scales
Marts and supermarkets usually go one step further: a label scale sits at the fresh section, prints a barcode that encodes the item and the weight/price, and the counter just scans it — no typing at all. This is the classic supermarket flow and keeps queues fast when every bag has a different weight.
The catch: the POS must read the barcode format the scale prints. These "price-embedded" or "weight-embedded" barcodes come in a few formats, so the scale and software have to agree before purchase.
Option 3: Directly connected scale
The scale plugs into the terminal and sends the weight to the bill automatically — no label, no typing. It is the fastest flow but the most model-dependent: whether a specific scale talks to a specific POS depends on drivers and the connection (serial, USB, network). Never buy on "saab software se chalta hai" from a market stall.
Before you buy — the checklist
- Decide the flow first: type the weight, scan a printed label, or a live connection — in that order of simplicity.
- If buying a label scale, confirm the barcode format your POS reads.
- If buying a connected scale, send the exact model to your software vendor — a model number gets a yes/no answer; "digital scale" does not.
- Put the scale where the customer can see the display — it is the cheapest theft control in the shop.
Running a grocery or mart on SYEZPOS? Weighted items work out of the box — enter the weight at billing and pricing, stock and the books follow. For a connected or label-printing scale, message us the model on WhatsApp before you buy and we will confirm it. See the grocery POS page for the rest of the kiryana workflow.
